Logic of Demons by H.A. Goodman + Interview

Author: H.A. Goodman

Publisher: AuthorHouse

Rate: 3 stars

There she was, 30 feet away, a monster of sorts, sitting behind her desk looking straight at Devin with a razor-sharp stare, cold and motionless. Her eyes beamed with a red glow. Devin recoiled; he couldn’t help it. Like every other area in this office world, there was no way to see anything clearly. One could barely make out the antique furniture and large paintings throughout her office. However, a small lamp on her desk was located close enough to highlight every one of her grotesque features.

What would you do if the love of your life was murdered by a deranged killer? Would you become a vigilante and seek retribution? And would this revenge affect those you care for in the afterlife? LOGIC OF DEMONS The Quest for Nadine's Soul takes you on a journey inside the psyches of men and women forced to deal with the spiritual consequences of their decisions. Through the lives of a demon, two Angels, and a mysterious teenage girl, a plethora of politically and socially relevant issues ranging from the roots of genocide and sex trafficking to child conscription and religious fundamentalism are addressed in this fantasy thriller.

Lyn's WoW:
Title: The Lost Gate (Mither Mages #1)
Author: Orson Scott Card
Publisher: Tor Books
Pub date: Jan 4, 2011
Danny North, descendant of exiled mages from another world, is taken aback when he comes into his true powers as a gatemage. He could reconnect his people with their long-lost home world, but gatemages are usually killed to maintain a fragile peace among the exiled clans. Fleeing his home, Danny finds refuge and slowly explores his potential, planning to open the first Great Gate in 14 centuries. Meanwhile, on the far-off world of Westil, a young gatemage named Wad finds love, conspiracies, and betrayal in a remote castle while struggling to recall his hazy past. Though occasionally uneven and meandering, this ambitious tale is well crafted, highly detailed, and pleasantly accessible. (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
The moment I saw the cover and read the summary, I knew I want this book! It'll released at Jan 4, I only wish it'll available in my favorite bookstore!

Forget Me Not (1)

Forget me not is a weekly meme hosted by The Thoughts of a Book Junky and dedicated to books that are not brand new but still worthy of reading and are on our TBR list.

Today's highlight is:
Istanbul: Memories and the City by Orhan Pamuk, English version was published in 2005. This is not a fiction; more likely a portrait of a city in the eye of Orhan Pamuk, one of the greatest writer of our time. He's one of my favorite author; won Nobel Prize in 2006 for his book: My Name is Red.

Reminiscent of works by Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez, Pamuk’s novels, mostly set in his native Turkey, have racked up an International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, New York Times Notable Books of the Year, and profiles on NPR (see Snow, ***1/2 Nov/Dec 2004). Marcel Proust comes to many critics’ minds when describing Istanbul, an introspective account that transcends the memoir, as it also describes a city losing its identity. More than a city or guide book, Istanbul is "the most haunting, heartbreaking, gorgeous book ever about a city," says The San Diego Union-Tribune. Although Pamuk’s memoir concludes with his adolescence, it rings true to the universal coming-of-age experience. Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

This is a melancholic memoir about a city that experienced its downfall after the ruin of Ottoman Empire; also how the citizen deals with that, including Pamuk's family.

I don't usually put non-fiction in this blog but I make exception for this one because I really like the way Orhan Pamuk writes. By the way today we're not participate in Teaser Tuesday as usual because I read protective galley and bond not to spoil anything at least two weeks before the pub date. But I think there will be another TT next week!

Now, do you have old release in your TBR list?

The Lying Game by Sara Shepard

Author: Sara Shepard

Publisher: HarperTeen from HarperCollins

Rating: 4 Stars.

Sutton Mercer had everything every girl in her age wanted; good look, fame, money, and a handsome boyfriend. But one day she woke up and discovered that she was dead. She could barely remember a thing about her living life and how she died. And to her surprise, she discovered that she had a long-lost twin, Emma. Living a complete different life from Sutton, Emma moved from one foster home to another until she also found out about Sutton.
Disguised herself as Sutton, Emma tried to reveal the mystery of her sister's death. It wasn't an easy task to act as Sutton in front of her family and friends; but she has to do it for Sutton and herself. Because the killer is shadowing her every moves...

Great novel! I'm a fan of thriller and I really like this book. It's intense, mesmerizing, and well-written; a must-read for YA and thriller lovers. Sara Shepard - famously known as the author of Pretty Little Liars - manage to present thriller in high school situation in a neat way. Without too much blood, too much scream, and too much hide-and-seek chase in the dark, but still presenting the intensity of a thriller. The characters are interesting. As I continue my reading, I get to know more about Sutton's friends and sister, and also Sutton herself. But there are so many things still left in the dark which I couldn't helped but playing detective.
As most YA books, this story was presented in first person POV, from Sutton's eyes as she shadowing her twin sister. But we also able to see get insight thought of Emma, something that could gone wrong if it was done poorly, but fortunately it works in this story. The pace was a bit slow at the beginning but gradually picked up the speed from the moment Emma met Sutton's family. Together with Emma and Sutton, I gathered the clues and shards of Sutton's memories. I constantly guessed and wondered who was the culprit? Who killed Sutton and for what reason? I guess I have to wait for the answer till the second book Never Have I Ever comes out on August.
For a YA lovers who gets tired with love triangle, you'll embrace this book wholeheartedly, for thriller lovers who would like to read something less bloody than your usual reading list, you'll enjoy this.

Guest Post Monday(2): Author H.A Goodman

Our latest blog feature: Guest Post Monday. Every Monday we will invite someone from Book-Lovers Community as our guest and answers one or two questions. It could be author, publisher, librarian, or book blogger like all of you!

Deranged Book Lovers proudly present (drum roll please):
H.A. Goodman!
his debut novel Logic of Demons received favorable and interesting reviews from bloggers and reviewers. I think it's quite safe to say we'll see more of him in the future, eh?
We're curious about author's life so we ask one question to Hal:
How's your life changed when you became an author and/or what were you doing before being an author?

H.A. Goodman: The only thing about my life that's changed is that now, I believe I have the ability to write a story. When I first started writing, it was difficult to think of myself as an author, especially before my first novel. Logic of Demons has been received favorably by reviewers and readers, so the validation has helped boost my confidence. The most important change in me has been confidence. The main obstacle to writing and almost everything else in life, from my view, is the ability to stay positive and believe in yourself. It's easier said than done, but if you can do so, you're chances for success are increased exponentially.

H.A. Goodman lives in Los Angeles and - sadly - has no twitter or facebook account where we could stalk follow him. No pet to cuddle at night although he owned a German Shepherd when he was a teenager. He owns a small consulting business for all types of companies; but he always has passion from writing and as result, we got the chance to read Logic of Demons! Beside working and writing, he also busy promoting his debut novel to us, blogger and reviewers, and to bigger publisher.
I don't know about publisher but Deranged Book Lovers couldn't resist interesting novel so you'll read my review on Logic of Demons in the next few days!

Deeper (Tunnels #2) by Brian Williams and Roderick Gordon

Tittle: Deeper (Tunnels #2)

Author: Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams

Publisher: The Chicken House

Rating: 3 and a half stars

Will and Chester raced down the avenue after Cal, not thinking, not caring, where they were going as long as they got away from the onslaught of airborne monsters. They were driven by a single thought, almost a primordial fear: to escape from these screeching, oversized beasts.

This is the second book of Tunnels series. If you haven't read the first book, I suggest you to stop reading this now. I have the review for the first book, Tunnels, in HERE.

Escaped from Colony and the fierce grip of Styx, Will, Chester, and Cal going deeper underground searching for Will's father. But the underworld is much more sinister and cruel that topsoil; plenty beasts and Styx's limiters roaming around. Not only that, Will also discovered Styx plan to destroyed human race above the earth and to rule the world. A dream that seems so impossible but if you're accustomed with dictator maniacs, you know they always want that. So now not only make sure his father still alive, dodging Styx, escape from mortal dangers, Will and his friends have to find a way to save humanity!

I've discovered that in some series, especially trilogy, the second book usually the least interesting among the others. That's not what happened with Deeper; as far as I have read this series is being consistent. Surely it has the similar slow-pace-kinda-boring moments, but it still bearable. There we some surprises; I thought I was used to it by now but there were few times when I leafed the pages while reading casually, absolutely expect nothing and then something happened and my jaw dropped few inches. My thought at that time, "What the hell just happened? I didn't see that coming!!!" and the story manage to capture my interest again.
Not only that but there were some changes in Chester and Will friendship, especially after they met Drake and Elliot - two renegades who wandered at the Deep, hiding from the Styx while occasionally destroying their facilities. We also get to know more about the twins and Will's mother from several chapters which presented from Sarah Jerome's point of view.
Personally I'm not a fan of first person POV, and this book use third person POV which is my favorite POV in stories. For me it was one of the strong point of this book. Other points were  the rich description of the Deep - I can picture it very well in my imagination - and the suspense and surprises in every layer. Sadly, it lacked on character development. I think the authors were focusing more on the plot and story development, which was awesome, but character development is important, especially for series.
If you're looking for awesome main character who seems to be either super cool, super handsome, or super you, this is not the book you want. But if you're looking for epic adventure with rich and vivid description and to get lost in the dark underworld, you'll enjoy this series.

ps: My Tunnels book is UK version but my Deeper book is US version. I will suggest you to buy UK version because not only the cover is glossy, the paper quality is better. This is based on paperback version.

100+ Reading Challenge 2011

Beside hosting my own Wordsworth Classics Reading Challenge 2011 and participate in Crime Fiction Alphabet 2011 event, I think I can challenge myself one more, especially because I can crossover this challenge with other challenges. Amy J. at My Overstuffed Bookshelf host 100+ Reading Challenge. The goal is to read 100 or more books. These are the details:

DETAILS:
1. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate. Posting on GoodReads or wherever you post your reviews is good enough.

2. Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Manga, Graphic Novels, Library books, Novellas, Young Reader, Nonfiction – as long as the book has an ISBN or equivalent or can be purchased as such, the book counts. What doesn't count: Individual short stories or individual books in the Bible.

3. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.

4. Crossovers from other reading challenges count.

5. Challenge begins January 1st thru December, 2011. Books started before the 1st do not count. You can join at anytime.

I never count how many books I read in a year. I usually just pick up a book and read it. This challenge might help me keeping track on how many books I've read. If you want to join, go to Amy's blog and don't forget to submit yourself!

Lyn: I'm not celebrating Christmas but my friends does so I will congratulate them and perhaps visit their houses to eat some cakes :D, and then hangout with my friends who doesn't celebrate Christmas as well.
And for today, I'm arranging my new workroom + mini library. My sister had married and now lives with her husband so her room is empty. That mean I can take over use her room and of course I use it as my workroom and mini library. Not actually a library because I only have two small bookshelves where I cramped almost all my books.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Title: The Graveyard Book

Author: Neil Gaiman

Publisher: Harper Collins Children (US)

Rating: 4 Stars

There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a knife.
The knife had a handle of polished black bone, and a blade finer and sharper than any razor. If it sliced you, you might not even know you had been cut, not immediately.

Nobody Owens lived and grew up in the graveyard, raised by ghosts and well-guarded by mysterious man who belong to neither the world of living nor dead. Graveyard isn't a safe place; there are plenty dangers and adventures. But for Bod that is his beloved home, especially when outside the graveyard a dangerous man named Jack still looking for him, the same man that killed his family...

The excerpt was the opening passages from The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Despite the horror opening, this is a children book. Gaiman is well-known for presenting horror into children situation without forgetting the innocent and the fun that became a signature in every children book. Similar to Coraline, this is a terrific story presented in a very delicate way that glued my eyes to those pages. This is one of the books I read over and over again without getting bored. I like everything about this book; I like how it was written, I like the characters, I like the cover, and I like the illustrations (I read the hardcover version).
The main character Bod was believable; even though he grew up in Graveyard. He experienced all the things just the same as any other kids; having friends, play hide-and-seek (sometimes inside a tomb), and dealing with bullies. But he was special also; not only he could see and talk to the ghosts, he has the ability to fade so people couldn't see it, and plant nightmares into people's mind. Other characters such as Silas, Bod's ghost parents, and Jack the Man were also believable. Gaiman didn't explain them in long detailed paragraph but I could picture them quite easily. Some authors can be over the top with character description but lack in describing ambiance and surrounding situation, that's now what happened with this book. Every little thing about this book makes me love it and I hope Mr. Gaiman will write another adventures of Nobody Owens!

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Title: Shiver
Series:
The Wolves Mercy Falls #1
Author:
Maggie Stiefvater
Pages:
392 pages
Publisher:
Scholastic Press
My rating:
4 out of 5

Amazon|Book depository| Goodreads

Summary:

the cold.
Grace has spent years watching the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—watches back. He feels deeply familiar to her, but she doesn't know why.

the heat.
Sam has lived two lives. As a wolf, he keeps the silent company of the girl he loves. And then, for a short time each year, he is human, never daring to talk to Grace...until now.

the shiver.
For Grace and Sam, love has always been kept at a distance. But once it's spoken, it cannot be denied. Sam must fight to stay human—and Grace must fight to keep him—even if it means taking on the scars of the past, the fragility of the present, and the impossibility of the future

Review:

Maggie made a new image of wolf. A werewolf in fact.

This isn't like any other werewolf story you read in the streets or in the balcony or whatever you are reading or where you read it.
The way they change has something to do with the temperature. Unlike from the other stories that they can change whenever they want to. Sadly
thats not what happened in this story. And that's why i think its somewhat unique. "somewhat" because....I'm not fully satisfied? in fact I think I shouldn't be writing this review until im done reading the whole series.

Sam has been watching Grace for over six years. They first met when Grace was eleven and he is twelve and she was attacked by the wolves when she was a child. Sam saved her. As he took a human form in order to carry her back home. Though at first she could not remember

who and how she was saved. But soon after that. Grace has been obsessed with wolves. Seeing Sam in a far. Convincing herself that he is guarding her and even call him "My wolf".

I Honestly don't know where to start and how to start my review about this book. I couldn't say anymore than this book is not in my hate list nor in my love list. It's not that attractive nor boring to read. Most of the story is about the two individual loving each other in the a huge distance. That one is pure human and the other is a werewolf.

Sam is kind, patient and Gentle. He was turn to werewolf in a forcefully way. Trying hard to stay human just so he could talk and know Grace more.

As for Grace. After being bitten by the whole pack of wolf she remained human.

In someway its quite odd. I mean she's suppose to turn in to a werewolf just like Sam. And
Sam there was guarding her and waiting for her to change skin and might as well help her find the whole pack for like..forever. Isn't he sweet?

The story was written in a vivid way that every reader would easily understand and catch up.
Unlike some other novel that you'll only get to know the main characters thought. This one is not. You'll get to know what Sam or Grace thinks for each other. Knowing each views. And by that you'll grow to love them too.

The Story is more focused on Sam and Grace growing love for each other. And fighting the temperature that might turn Sam back to a wolf. Which they couldn't risk. Because losing Sam now. Means Losing him forever.

Teaser Tuesday (5)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title, and author too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers

Kay-c's Teaser:

I couldn't speak for the longest time. "You're one of them?"
My lips went nump as I asked the question that seemed so unreal. Shock fell on me like heavy snow and I froze. Blood drained from my head as Ivar's ghastly face flashed across my mind. Will couldn't be anything like her. It's not possible. "I don't understand"

AngelFire by Courtney Allison Moulton

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of SausagesLyn's Teaser:
Currently I'm reading protected Galley and to comply with publisher's request, I can't reveal what's in it until 2 weeks before they release the book. The book is written by Tom Holt and the title is Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Sausages. He's one of my favorite satire novelist and I did a quick visit to his website and found this funny quiz based on this J.W. Wells & Co series (which I like a lot though I haven't read all books in that series because it's so hard to find it in here T_T). So this is my result:
I answer if for fun and it said I'm not evil enough but I could work in post room. Lol!

Mithee's Teaser:

"Lochie, tell me we can stay together!" He reaches out for me and I crumple against him with a sob. Wrapping his arms around me, he holds me tight. "I’ll do everything," he whispers into my hair. "I give you my word. I’ll do everything I can, Maya. We’ll find a way to stay together. I’ll figure it out, I will. OK?"

"He is my soul mate, my fresh air, the reason I look forward to getting up every morning."

~Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma

That's two teasers for you from the same book! I have finished this book already, and oh my god. It was such a great, great, great read! The teaser might be a little common for two people forbiddenly in love, but what makes it really heartbreaking (and maybe disgusting for some) is where their story is coming from. Click the title to read the synopsis. You know you want to!

Review: Delirium by Lauren Oliver (ARC)

Series: Delirium #1
Pages: 440 (Hardcover)
Source: ARC from NetGalley

Publishing Date: February 2011
Published by: HarperTeen

Review:

If I were suddenly thrown into a world where people think that love is a ‘deadly’ disease that they must protect themselves from, like taking love vaccines, I would’ve raised my eyebrows and laughed at their faces for being completely and utterly ridiculous. That was exactly how I felt like doing when I was first introduced to Delirium. And until now, after reading the book, part of me still feels that way.

After Lena’s mother was killed by armor deliria nervosa, there was nothing more she wanted than to get the cure that would rid of the possibility of her contracting the deadly disease. Her mother was infected with the deadly disease, and when her dad died, she suffered so painfully it caused her death. So all her life, she’d been looking forward to the procedure. Several days before her procedure though, her life was turned completely upside down when the least of all her expectations happened and she fell in love with a boy named Alex.

“Love. The deadliest of all the deadly things.”

Guest Post Monday (1): Author Jennifer Echols

Our latest blog feature: Guest Post Monday. Every Monday we will invite someone from Book Community as our guest and answers one or two questions. It could be author, publisher, librarian, or book blogger like all of you!

I am happy to announce that we have a guest post from a fantabulous author whom I think is one of the best Contemporary Young Adult author ever! I was so stoked to see her reply to my e-mail 3 hrs after I sent it. She's so kind! *hearts* But moving on. Here is Ms. Jennifer Echols to tell us something about her life before and after being published:

When I was younger I thought about being an author ALL THE TIME. I wrote poems, stories, and the beginnings of novels, and I always entered writing contests at my school and worked on the school newspaper.

My grandmother wanted to be an author, too. In the 1950s she wrote a beautiful story and sent it to a famous literary magazine, The New Yorker. They rejected it, and she never sent anything out again. This affected me two ways. First, someone in my family was creative and took a chance with her art. It never occurred to me that I couldn't do that too. Second, she gave up way too fast! I promised myself that I would not give up when I got rejected.

But it did take me a very long time to get published. When I finally sold a book, I was working at home as a freelance copyeditor and taking care of my son, who was four years old at the time, and I squeezed my writing into my day somewhere. After I got published, none of that changed much! I still work at home as a freelance copyeditor, my son is nine, and I am not sure how I ever find time to write a book. But I do.

The big difference in my life is readers like you telling me that you've enjoyed my work! Writing is a lonely business, and sometimes it's hard to find the motivation to keep going. But with readers letting me know they're looking forward to my next novel, I can always write another word.

Thanks for including me in your blog! I really appreciate it.

Jenn
